Starting point: Junior year AP CSA student. Class grade of A, but scored a 2 on his first two mock exams. Turned out he'd been using Copilot for nearly every assignment.
What worked: two weeks of hand-typed Java classes and methods (no autocomplete), followed by four weeks of FRQ practice under exam conditions, then two full timed mocks. Marcus finished with a 4 on the May exam and used the AP CSA success as a college-app signal.
Scratch (K–5), Python (middle school through high school data/ML work), Java (specifically for AP CSA), and web basics (HTML/CSS/JavaScript). We don't currently offer C++, Swift, Rust, or serious game-engine coaching.
Elementary students can absolutely start with Scratch and block-based coding. We coach kids as young as 6 with the Intro Coding for Kids program. The main constraint isn't age — it's attention span and reading fluency.
If they're coasting through CS class assignments with AI and haven't been tested in AI-free conditions yet, yes — you're likely heading toward the same pattern we see in math: strong grades, then a rough test or interview. Our Coding Grade Recovery and AP CSA Bootcamp both include explicit AI-use protocols.
AP CSP (Computer Science Principles) is a broader survey course — more accessible, less code-heavy. AP CSA (Computer Science A) is a rigorous Java-focused exam that maps to a first-year college CS course. If your kid is CS-track, they should aim for AP CSA. If they want general CS exposure, AP CSP works.
