The AI Learning Trap

Before we describe our method, it's worth understanding the problem we're solving.

In 2026, a study tracking over 26,000 secondary students found that students who adopted AI tools for homework saw homework scores rise 18% — but exam scores drop 20% within six months, and entrance-exam performance drop 18–24% after two years.

A Wharton study reached a similar conclusion: students given ChatGPT during practice solved 48% more practice problems correctly, then scored 17% lower on the test than students who practiced without it.

The technical term is cognitive offloading. In plain English: when the AI does the thinking, the student's brain doesn't build the pathways a test requires. And the damage is delayed — report cards look normal for months, then everything falls off at once.

Our Method (Four Steps)

1. Diagnose the real gaps

Every engagement starts with a paid diagnostic session — 60 minutes of live problem work followed by a written 2-page report. We identify specific skill gaps ("shaky on factoring quadratics" rather than "bad at math"), estimate a timeline, and recommend a package. The diagnostic is refundable within 48 hours if it isn't a fit.

2. Build fluency, not familiarity

Familiarity is when a student says "yeah I've seen that." Fluency is when they can solve it, from a blank page, under time pressure, while narrating their reasoning. We drill for fluency, because that's what tests and interviews reward. Everything AI can produce — explanations, worked examples, step-by-step solutions — is helpful after the student has struggled with the problem, not before.

3. Simulate the environments that count

SAT and ACT: proctored practice tests under real timing. AP: full FRQ practice with justification-focused review. Nothing sneaks up on our students on test day because they've rehearsed the actual conditions.

4. Measure the outcome

Every session ends with a short written summary. Every month generates a one-page progress report (for 6–12, sent to the parent). Every package has a specific outcome we're measuring against — a score improvement, a grade recovery, a portfolio artifact, or an interview readiness signal. Progress is visible from day one.

How We Use AI in Our Coaching

We're not anti-AI. We use it heavily in lesson prep, problem-set generation, and session summaries. The question isn't whether AI is a tool — it's who's doing the thinking.

Our rule for students: solve first, then verify. Between sessions, work happens without AI. After a problem is solved, AI is fair game for checking work, generating variations, or explaining a concept differently. This mirrors what happens on the job or in the interview: real problem-solving without a chatbot, then AI-assisted refinement.
