Algebra 2 · 10 weeks

Chris M. — 68 to 91 in Algebra 2

Starting point: Homework grades in the mid-90s. First two chapter tests: 68 and 71. Parents concerned that "he seems to know it, then bombs the tests."

Weeks to identify root cause

What we found: Chris had been leaning on ChatGPT for homework since Algebra 1 and had never fully internalized factoring. His homework success made the gap invisible until Algebra 2 assumed the skill was solid.

What worked: two-week factoring remediation, an AI-off rule for weekly practice problems, and Friday problem check-ins to catch misconceptions early. Chris finished the semester at a 91 and is now enrolled in Pre-Calc without tutoring support.

SAT Math · 8 weeks

Priya S. — 590 to 720 on SAT Math

Starting point: Two SAT attempts, both around 590 Math. Strong overall student but running out of time on Module 2. Parents ready to try structured prep.

Full proctored practice tests

What we found: the score was capped by two specific question types — systems involving a quadratic and a line, and function-notation problems — plus pacing on later Module 2 questions.

What worked: drilled the two problem types to fluency, then rebuilt pacing through timed sections. Two full proctored practice tests to lock in test-day discipline. Final score: 720 on the March SAT.

AP CSA · 8 weeks

Marcus L. — Copilot dependency to a 4 on the AP

Starting point: Junior year AP CSA student. Class grade of A, but scored a 2 on his first two mock exams. Turned out he'd been leaning on Copilot for nearly every assignment.

Copilot use by week 3

What we found: Marcus could describe Java concepts conceptually but couldn't produce a clean method signature or trace a recursive call on paper. AI had been doing the mechanical work for him for two years.

What worked: two weeks of hand-typed Java classes and methods (Copilot disabled in his IDE), four weeks of FRQ practice under exam conditions, then two full timed mocks. Marcus finished with a 4 on the May exam.

AP Calc BC · 12 weeks

Marcus T. — 3 to 5 on AP Calc BC

Starting point: Scored a 3 on the AP Calc BC exam junior year. Retaking senior year for a stronger college application.

Full timed practice sections

What we found: Marcus' multiple-choice was already 4-worthy. The gap was FRQ justification quality — his answers were correct but his reasoning wasn't rigorous enough for AP graders.

What worked: targeted FRQ practice with written-response coaching, weekly full timed sections, and a rigid AI-off rule during practice. Also rebuilt series intuition (his weakest topic) with hand-worked convergence tests.

Grade Recovery · 4 weeks

Emma L. — from a 62 mid-quarter to 84 final

Starting point: Freshman year student who came home with a 62 in Algebra at mid-quarter. Parents on a 4-week Report-Card Rescue package.

Parent-student conversation about AI use

What we found: Emma was doing all her homework with Photomath and had missed most of the underlying skills. Combined with a hectic freshman schedule, she was falling further behind every week.

What worked: honest conversation about Photomath (no punishment, just data on why it was hurting her), then focused skill remediation on two specific gaps. Final quarter grade: 84.
